The View from my Window

August 10, 2011

We had zero yard in Dover. So, it was difficult to attract many birds near enough for observation. I did put up one of those suction-cup-mounted window feeders.  A purple finch stopped by for a snack pretty rapidly. However, our cats took to jumping at the window whenever he landed. So Mr. purple finch never stayed at the feeder for long. A wind storm knocked that feeder down, and an eccentric (most people would say crazy) man who kept the streets clean took it away before I could get it the next morning. It was nice of the eccentric man to clean our streets, anyway.

I was pretty excited to have a yard so the cats and I could watch birds from far enough away to not scare them off. I figured it would take a couple days for some avian visitors to find my new feeder.  So, I was pleasantly surprised when half a dozen goldfinches swooped in not ten minutes after I’d hung the feeder.

I like how one is hanging out sideways here:

This female landing on the cord is pretty cool too:

Moneyfacing!

December 22, 2009

Last week I stopped in my hometown in Ohio to visit my family on the way back from the American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting in San Francisco. My brother, Adam,  and I were explaining memes to my mom, and I stumbled upon this MoneyFace meme on knowyourmeme.com. Adam and I had a lot of fun making a few of our own moneyfaces using Photobooth and the built in iSight on my MacBook. (I believe at this point that approximately two thirds of my blog readers also use Macbooks and could do this immediately upon reading this post; so if you make some, please post them in the comments or post a link. I’d like to see how they turn out.) We used US and Canadian $5’s here.

Simpsonize Me!

September 30, 2009

Last week I had some fun using  some online tools to generate various styles of avatar. If you’re reading a blog (which you are), you probably know what an avatar is. But in case you’re saying “ava-what?”, what I mean by avatar is a visual representation of one’s self for use in online forums. The term comes from the Sanskrit “avatar” (अवतार) which means “to step down”, and refers to the incarnation or corporeal form taken by a deity when appearing on earth.
My brother had posted  a 1960’s style cartoonish portrait of himself on facebook, which at first I assumed he’d created by hand from cut paper, since that is one of his primary art mediums of choice (my brother’s cut paper artwork really is cool; check it out). I was surprised to find that I could create my own papery 60’s self-portrait at MadMenYourself.com:

madmen_fullbodyThis generator tool really is fun to play with. It’s like a 2D Mr. Potato Head. Playing with this made me wonder what other kinds of avatar generators were out there and I found this one, which allows you to create a Simpson’s style picture of yourself.  Rather than choosing parts and features like the Mad Men tool, this one actually starts with a user-supplied picture and then allows some fine tuning. I was pretty impressed with how well it seemed to work:simpsonize_compare
